The mystery in your inbox (Slack's notification V.S. Basecamp)
In the article "What's that mystery in your inbox costing you?" Jason Fried show's how Slack's broken notification system is a problem.
One of the more interesting parts is that in Slack's system it gives you zero context on what you're getting into before you click on a channel.
On the other hand Basecamp's is full of useful context that doesn't require diving into the actual thing to know if it's going to be useful or it's going to be fun or even completely off topic.
This stops the constant rabbit holing and lowers the amount of variable rewards that addict us.
Source--Twist Designing to be less stressfull Talks about hos they designed their notification system to solve this problem as well.
