Slack won because it was fun
The front line worker didn't want to use something that's overly formal if they didn't have to.
Just like how a posh designer wouldn't dream of using a windows computer with clunky web based software. It goes against their values. It doesn't make sense.
Slack's design Company Metalab knew this. It's designed to be fun.
