Email's slow decent
- Email started out as a thing that people would just talk to people
- Email started to be used for work
- Then people realized that they could advertise to people via Email
- People realized that this was a valuable attention real estate and notifications stared to go there too
- Gmail tried to differentiate the different types of emails, but to poor success
- Gmail stopped innovating and even killed of it's internal competitor "Inbox"
- HEY came along and fixed a ton of problems that it caused
Reasons Email failed:
- There's no differentiation between emails that have to be read now and those that can be read whenever (newsletters) (see: divides things that are different)
- Email lacks transparency because of the reply all problem
